KNX Planning for New Builds and Renovations
KNX planning defines what your building should be able to do, where switches, presence detectors and actuators go and how large the distribution board will be. We plan functions, topology and control cabinet from one source. Over 20 years of experience in system integration.
What does KNX planning include?
KNX planning covers the requirements survey, function list, device selection, topology and the design of the distribution board. The result is a basis for installation and programming.
Requirements survey
Lighting, heating, shading and security: room by room we clarify which functions the building gets.
Topology and devices
Lines, areas and components from ABB, Zennio and Phoenix Contact, matched to the function list.
Distribution board and programming
We build the control cabinet in-house and deliver it pre-programmed and tested to the construction site.
KNX topology and structure: lines, areas, couplers
KNX topology divides a system into lines and areas. Up to 64 devices work on one line segment, and with line repeaters up to 256 per line. Line couplers connect up to 15 lines into an area, and area couplers connect up to 15 areas into the complete system.
Physical address
Each device receives an address following the pattern area.line.device, for example 1.1.12. It shows where the device sits in the system.
Group addresses
They link switches and actuators by function. A clean structure, for example by trade and floor, determines how maintainable the system is later.
Plan reserves
If lines are not filled to the limit, devices can be added later without rebuilding the topology.
Why planning comes before installation
Planning mistakes often only show up at commissioning, when the cables are already in place. A missing bus cable to a window or a distribution board that is too small can then only be fixed with considerable effort. That is why every plan needs reserves for later extensions.

Frequently asked questions about KNX planning
How much does KNX planning cost?
The effort depends on the size and range of functions of the building. After a short call and a floor plan you receive a concrete assessment.
Can you plan KNX yourself?
Yes, the basics can be learned. Without experience, however, mistakes in topology, board size and group address structure become expensive later.
What do you need to get started?
A floor plan and a short list of what the building should be able to do. You can send both to us on WhatsApp.
