KNX Project Rescue: Rebuilding a System Without the ETS File

What to do when documentation is missing or the integrator is gone?

KNX project rescue: when a smart home or an automated commercial building turns into a black box, the cause is usually a critical loss of data. KNX systems are designed to last for decades. In practice, however, building owners, property managers and operators often face a serious problem: the technical documentation is missing, the original ETS project is lost and the former system integrator can no longer be reached. In such cases a structured KNX project rescue is the only way to restore the operational safety of the building.

We read out your system, reconstruct the project and deliver a clean new ETS project.

KNX project rescue

Practical example: a five-star hotel controlled by hand

A striking case from our practice shows how far-reaching this problem can be: a well-known five-star hotel of an international chain received a modern building automation system about 15 years ago. The entire climate control and lighting could be operated from central control stations.

When, after more than a decade, the first hardware aged and had to be modernized, an attempt at self-repair caused a system crash. The remote control failed completely. The problem: the original installer no longer existed, and the original ETS project could not be found.

Out of fear of damage to its reputation, the hotel management hired additional staff who walked from control cabinet to control cabinet for months to switch actuators on and off by hand. Only when management decided on a professional KNX project rescue by AGR Technologies GmbH could the system be fully reconstructed and digitized, through a targeted technical audit and precise bus diagnostics. Today the hotel control system runs error-free and fully automatically again.

What are the risks without a current ETS project?

Without the original programming file and the documentation of the group addresses, every change to the system is an incalculable risk. It can no longer be traced:

Which physical addresses the installed hardware (for example from ABB or Zennio) has.
How the logical links between switches, presence detectors and actuators were programmed.
Which safety and central functions are active in the background.

Typical requests to our KNX Help-Line arise exactly when defective devices must be replaced, new functions added or components from other manufacturers integrated, but the system is blocked.

How a successful KNX project rescue works

Can a lost KNX project be fully restored? In the vast majority of cases the answer is yes. Even when the original project is missing, modern diagnostic methods make it possible to reconstruct the system architecture. The process has four steps:

1. Survey of the infrastructure

We analyze the physical topology of the network on site. We record the installed components, check the power supplies and inspect the condition of the bus lines.

2. Diagnosis of the KNX bus traffic

With specialized software we read out the telegram traffic on the bus line. From this data stream the active group addresses and the functional links between the devices can be deciphered.

3. Reconstruction of the control logic

Through targeted function tests we reconstruct, step by step, the scenes for lighting, climate control, shading and the visualizations (for example on Zennio touch panels).

4. New project documentation

At the end of the KNX project rescue we hand over a completely new, clean ETS project including all circuit diagrams, data sheets and parameterizations. The building is fully maintainable again.

Why the technical audit has to come first

A common mistake is replacing hardware too early when the system status is unclear. Without a sound analysis this almost always leads to new malfunctions and unnecessary costs. A professional technical audit is therefore essential. We assess the signal quality, check for communication errors and determine the potential for future modernization.

An audit is strongly recommended if:

  • The original ETS project or the system documentation is incomplete.
  • The previous service provider no longer supports the system.
  • The building has changed owners or a modernization is planned.
  • The system shows irregular failures or sluggish behavior.

Conclusion

A lost project or the departure of the old integrator does not mean that the hardware you invested in is worthless. With a professional KNX project rescue you take full control of your building technology back.

AGR Technologies GmbH makes sure your system becomes transparent, safe and future-proof again, without the costly complete replacement of components that still work.
