What is the difference between KNX and Loxone?
KNX vs Loxone: the core difference is open versus closed. KNX is a manufacturer-neutral standard in which devices from many manufacturers work on the same bus and are programmed with the ETS. With Loxone, the Miniserver, extensions and the Loxone Config software come from the same vendor.
Both systems control lighting, heating, shading and security. The decision is mainly about how free you remain later in your choice of devices and service partners.
KNX and Loxone compared directly
Vendor lock-in
With KNX you choose freely between manufacturers, for example ABB or Zennio. With Loxone the central components largely come from one source.
Architecture and programming
KNX works decentrally: each device carries its own function and is configured in the ETS. Loxone bundles the logic centrally in the Miniserver.
Service over decades
Any KNX integrator can take over a KNX system if the ETS file is available or reconstructed. That makes you independent of the original installer.
When is KNX the better fit?
- Larger residential and commercial properties with many functions.
- You want to combine devices from different manufacturers.
- The system should run for a long time and be extended later.
When does Loxone fit?
Loxone fits if you want a single-vendor system with central logic and deliberately stay with one manufacturer. We work with KNX ourselves and advise from that perspective.
