KNX Costs

KNX Costs: What Drives the Price

The KNX costs of a system depend on three things: the number of functions, the number of devices and the scope of programming and visualization. We give a reliable price once we have a floor plan and a function list. Here you can see what the total is made of.

What makes up KNX costs?

The total consists of components, the distribution board with installation, and planning and programming. Which item dominates depends on the range of functions.

Components

Actuators, switches, presence detectors, power supply and interfaces. The price depends on the manufacturer and the number of functions.

Distribution board and installation

Control cabinet, wiring and bus cable. We build the board in-house and deliver it pre-programmed.

Planning and programming

Topology, ETS programming, commissioning and documentation. Logic functions and visualization increase the effort.

What does KNX roughly cost? Market reference values

For a single-family house of 160 to 180 m², builders and planners publicly name additional costs of usually 15,000 to 20,000 euros compared with a conventional installation. The range depends heavily on equipment and manufacturer.

ItemPublicly named reference values
Additional KNX costs, single-family house (160–180 m²)approx. €15,000–20,000
KNX smart home in a new build, depending on equipmentfrom approx. €18,000 (basic) to over €150,000 (premium)
KNX planning, single-family houseapprox. €2,000–4,500

How can you reduce KNX costs?

Good planning before installation saves the most. Later changes to cables and the distribution board are the most expensive part of a project.

  • Plan functions by priority and leave reserves for later extensions.
  • Have the distribution board delivered pre-programmed. This shortens commissioning on site.
  • Modernize existing systems instead of replacing them completely if the bus cable is in good condition.

Costs for existing systems

For an existing system, every cost estimate starts with a technical audit. If the ETS file is missing or the system runs unstably, you then know whether repair, reconstruction or modernization makes sense.

That is what our KNX Help-Line with project rescue is for.

Frequently asked questions about KNX costs

How much does KNX cost in a single-family house?

Publicly named reference values for 160 to 180 m² are usually 15,000 to 20,000 euros in additional costs compared with a conventional installation. With a floor plan and a function list we prepare a concrete assessment.

How much does KNX programming cost?

The effort depends on the number of devices, the logic functions and the visualization. After an overview of the system we give you a concrete range.

Why is KNX more expensive than a wireless solution?

KNX is a wired, manufacturer-neutral standard. In return, devices from different brands stay compatible and the system can be extended for decades.
